Originally built in 1921 by architect Alfredo Fontana, the intimate Hotel Palacio Azul (painted powder blue) used to be the residence of a wealthy tobacco baron. In 2004 this lovely neo-classical water-front mansion was renovated into a lovely, colonial style hotel. The ambiance throughout clings to the hotel's roots. The restoration has left the structure and the colonial style tile floors intact. The 7 bedrooms are named after flowers; on the ground floor there is Marilope, Azucena and Mariposa' while Orquidea, Dalia, Verbena and Margarita are on the second floor. Six of the rooms have balconies (Mariposa does not). While located on the waterfront, the rooms do not offer a view of the bay, but the accommodation offers friendly service and reasonable rooms at a very reasonable price. Facilities include a restaurant and a lobby bar, and there’s a solarium on the roof. But Palacio Azul is located on the Malecon boulevard next to the Cienfuegos Yacht Club with billiards bar, restaurant, and nightclub. It is just a short walk from Cienfuegos’ main square, which makes it ideal place for tourists who wish to explore the famous city, its culture, architecture, traditions and customs.
