When the covid 19 started wreaking havoc in our lives, we see things in a constant change whether it is work, the school set up, number of deaths — almost everything is in constant change. We were caught off guard by how fatal the virus could be.
The virus that we know can land on different surfaces, and given its nature of being highly contagious, there is no wonder how the virus can easily spread. Although the risk of infection is low when it comes to just touching surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus, there are still chances of the virus developing and causing death to the patient. This is where our responsibility as homeowners comes in.
There is a need to follow standard procedures in cleaning your houses whether it is surface or carpet cleaning.
When do you need to clean and disinfect your house?
There are many tools and cleaning agents you can use and ordinary detergent or soap still cleans surfaces and remove most bacteria, therefore, decreasing the risk of COVID infection that can be caught from infected surfaces.
Ordinarily, cleaning once a day is enough to remove the virus from surfaces that may be infected. This is given that there is no sick member in the space you are in. However, when there is a COVID-positive patient in the same house/apartment, cleaning once a day is not sufficient. You need to clean and disinfect as regularly as possible.
You also need to consider that cleaning and disinfecting are two different things. Cleaning may remove dust and dirt, but it does not necessarily remove bacteria and viruses. Soaps are effective in removing most bacteria and viruses but you can opt for antibacterial cleaning agents that remove 99% of the virus. Also, take note that just because you clean once, does not necessarily mean that you have already removed the virus. There needs to be constant cleaning that needs to be done especially you have an infected person with you.
- Frequent cleaning is needed especially if:
- There are low vaccination rates in your place
- High transmission of COVID-19 in the place
- People do not wear a mask and do not observe proper distancing
- The place is occupied with people who are at risk of severe COVID-19 illness
The following can help you prevent the spread of the virus:
- Always clean and disinfect soft surfaces like rugs, carpet, drapes, etc.
- Vacuum as regularly as possible.
- When doing laundry, make sure you use hot water especially when the clothes were exposed to a patient who has COVID-19
- Always bring alcohol or disinfectant with you and spray surfaces in the outdoor areas when you go out
- Do not touch high-touch surfaces like metal and plastic
- Vaccinate as soon as possible and make sure family members do so too
- Do not go out when it is not needed
- When symptoms are observed, seek medical attention immediately
- Educate people you love
- Do not spread false information
- Do not panic
- Always observe proper social distancing.
